When the extreme nationalist admiral Horthy comes to power in Hungary in 1919, after a short reign of communists in Hungary, fighters of the Hungarian Red Army are no longer sure of their lives. István is one such soldier, and he seeks protection at a farm in the countryside. The secret of the two women who live there drives István to an inner conflict.

My first film by the great Hungarian director Jancsó. He has a special film style, which I have to get used to. Its long takes and special composition make the film very close to the skin. The story also contributed to this, but despite the interesting theme and the good execution, it didn't all come across as clear to me. In my opinion, this was mainly due to the embarrassingly bad subtitles. My Hungarian isn't what it used to be. What I found strong about the film was that you sympathize with István, who arrives alone on that farm and sees the practices of the two women, and does not know what to do. 3.5* for now, and I'll check out The red and the white + Electra, my love soon.
