The House Next Door is a typical TV production. So don't expect hard-boiled horror. The film is very restrained in that respect. It focuses more on tension and suspense, and does so quite well. A decent story, too. What the film does in a refreshing way is that the house where the evil resides isn't an old house cursed by dark tragedies that once occurred there. The house is newly built. The land on which it's built is also perfectly intact. Simply a piece of forest without any nasty history. The cliché of the old Native American burial ground is refreshingly avoided.

The premise isn't a bad one. The film features various residents who, over time, are violently confronted with their deepest fears, grief, or neuroses. The house manipulates its inhabitants and robs them of their sense of well-being. The most important role in the film is reserved for neighbor Cole, who witnesses one resident after another losing their minds. She blames the house for the culprit, but is not believed. Cole is a fun protagonist. Pleasantly and superficially portrayed by Lara Flynn Boyle. Simply solid and without too much frills, as is often the case with characters in a TV production. Cole brings just enough substance to her character to make her sympathetic. The other characters fail to evoke that feeling and are merely shallow pawns in the story's service.

The House Next Door is a routine film. It has a simple, yet entertaining story. The turmoil in the house and its effect on Cole and the other residents in the neighborhood is fun to watch. It's not scary, nor is it bloody or shocking. It does have occasional suspense. The approach is appealing, and the film tells its story solidly without resorting to sensationalism. I enjoyed this TV production.
