Hamburg 1935. Nine-year-old Hans-Jürgen Massaquoi is the only Negro at school having a hard time. His mother, the white nurse Bertha, has been abandoned by his father and raises him alone. She develops a relationship with Franz, who likes Hans-Jürgen, but begins to sympathize more and more with the Nazi ideology.
