Un Secret plot

"A 15-year-old boy unearths a shocking family secret."

The story begins in 1985 when François learns that his father is missing. He goes looking and finds his old father confused. That confrontation takes him back to his childhood. As a 7-year-old boy, he was an especially shy and sickly child. He also bears little resemblance to his parents: his (Jewish) father Maxime was a sports athlete before the war and his mother was a swimming champion, but he is a scared and shy boy. As the years go by, François feels the disappointment of his parents more and more and more and more often he seeks comfort from his Jewish neighbor Louise. When he is 15 years old, Louise tells him a strictly hidden family secret from the last months of the war. He discovers the background to their passion and shame and it becomes clear to him that his parents' past has not turned out quite as idyllic as he had always assumed as a boy.

Un secret is somewhat judged because the story is rather predictable and for some a bit messy. I was just happy to hear a story from the point of view of some Jews who were not doing so badly, until the war came. To which each of them, as far as possible, reacted in their own way. A matter of trying to survive, but at the same time life goes on.

Even more important is the situation in the early 1950s. Even though the war is over, it remains in the clothes. Difficult to talk about it, to look at images, to tell someone what all happened, ... It is mainly because of that subject that the film is still compelling.

I don't mean to say that the film is cheap because it deals with a sensitive subject. On the contrary, the acting is certainly quite strong and the atmosphere of the 30s-50s is also quite good. The later 80s are somewhat less. Here you notice that the black and white theme was partly chosen to cover up the poor make-up. And also to show the contrast with the war years. Why not the other way around? Because the war years are the essence of the film and not the later years...

In short, a beautiful film that could have been better here and there, but is certainly not bad. Fascinating (but somewhat predictable) story about a time that we should certainly not forget...

An appealing family drama about a covered-up, dramatic incident during World War II. The film starts off a bit slow, but from the moment Hannah (Ludivine Sagnier) makes her entrance, there is a fascinating story about mutual relationships. Cécile de France shines like never before, although her relationship with Patrick Bruel could have been a bit more subtle, I think.

With an autobiographical bestseller as a source, Miller as director and a cast that is some of the best French cinema has seen this century, you'd think you couldn't go wrong.

Still, the film couldn't really captivate me. Perhaps the structure and pacing are the main cause - but also that it remains a bit unclear at times who is who. Maybe I just saw it at the wrong time. Whatever.
