Herbert Fowle (Richard Attenborough) is a timid man who is accused of murdering his own wife. Wilfred Morgenhall (Peter Sellers) is the lawyer who will assist him in the defense. Unfortunately for Fowle, Morgenhall is not the best person for the job. In reality, Morgenhall has not even handled a single case yet, but has been waiting for his breakthrough as a top lawyer for 40 years.
