Good.

I'm not into car racing - calling it a sport is going a bit too far for me - and I'm glad Bobby Deerfield isn't about that. What it does turn around is simple: two completely different people find each other, although not everything runs smoothly.

The movie feels quite realistic. Some things get a little less attention - after an hour it even falls apart for a while -, but I still remember the pureness of this film.

Al Pacino acts flawlessly. Without really excelling as he does in films from the same period, he makes Bobby Deerfield an interesting character: first extinguished, then more lively, but throughout the film he continues to exude an insecurity, it could hardly be more human.

It must be said that Marthe Keller is a more than decent opponent. Her accent is a bit against her, but despite / thanks to a complex character she manages to hold her own against Pacino.

The playing time is a bit too long - fifteen minutes could have been taken off -, but Bobby Deerfield never gets bored. The film has too much atmosphere for that. Sydney Pollack makes full use of the locations, ignores car races and ensures that the two protagonists keep each other's level high. That's all you should do as a director, it turns out.

3.5

Good film about a successful racing driver who meets a woman while visiting a colleague. Despite this, don't expect a movie about car racing, because this is a romantic drama. The two main characters and their relationship know enough to captivate. It helps that they are excellently portrayed by Al Pacino and Marthe Keller. A pleasant, easy pace and beautiful locations of part of Europe.

Hmf.. what a bullshit.

It seems like Pollack was eager to make a popular European existential Antonioni-esque drama at the time or something, with very little success.

Fortunately there are still Pacino and beautiful pictures of beautiful locations such as Swiss mountains, Como and Tuscany, not to mention a total loss of 2 hours of time,
