The also somewhat implausible romantic input between Ford and Malone disrupted to some extent

the course of the story, but Crawford and Ford were really good acting again here,

with Crawford almost paternally taking care of a rather timid and naive Ford.

Remakes aren't just a thing of the past. It was also done in full in the studio era. A well-known example in the noir field is The Maltese Falcon, which was also filmed in 1931 and 1936.

This film has also been made into a play several times. The first as the Howard Hawks film The Criminal Code in 1931. Films were also made in Spanish and French almost simultaneously. Seven years later, another film version with Penitiary follows. THE third American painting in less than twenty years is this Convicted. The Hawks version The Criminal Code is the better movie. Hawks gives the film more identity and more atmosphere and some nice expressionistic touches. In Hawk's film, the pressure is much more palpable and the film as a whole is a lot more claustrophobic. The main character is also a lot younger. It is mainly a lesson in how much difference nuances and smaller style choices make, because the films do not differ much from each other on paper . Convicted is a bit more sentimental and sometimes emphasizes individual dramatic moments a bit more (the scenes with and around his father who is not in Hawk's film, for example).

Very nice in Convicted is the role of Glenn Ford, always nice to see him in a noir. Other than that, it's a great film, but I'm going a half lower than with The Criminal Code. But it was very interesting to see two film versions of the same story in quick succession.
