A darkly tinged story with perverse, psychotic thoughts that gradually unfolds into a completely different outcome than you initially suspect. Ultimately, it's a story in which money, revenge, and betrayal are the motivations for the various murders, with the director adding an unnecessary extra to heighten the mystery and, above all, to mislead the viewer. Not a good choice. Excellent performances by Strindberg and Fenech, the latter giving off a fantastic presence with her beautiful eyes. A solid, deadly mystery! 6.5/10

The title is already beautiful; that alone is enough to make you want to watch the film. Or Fenech's breasts. Yet, the leading roles of Strindberg and Pistilli are also quite good. The story is uneven; it's essentially a melodramatic, erotic (the complications surrounding Fenech wouldn't be out of place in a porno), psychological (Pistilli's role is food for psychologists), horror film with a recurring black cat.

The protagonists' actions are constantly illogical, yet this is pure entertainment. Precisely because the film is what it is: a bit strange, but enjoyable nonetheless.

I like the Giallo subgenre because it's stylistic, mysterious, and graphic. Yet, I'm increasingly realizing that, after the work of Dario Argento, Mario Bava, and Lucio Fulci, there are precious few truly good Giallo films to be found. Your Vice Is a Closed Room and Only I Have the Key is my first Sergio Martino and, as far as I'm concerned, easily falls into the "I would rather have done something else with my time" category.

Near Venice, a writer surrounds his villa with all sorts of hippies and stoner characters. He makes a sport of humiliating his wife and having affairs with anyone he can find, whether it's the Black maid or his own niece. Then, one by one, his former sweethearts are found dead, and he becomes the prime suspect.

The film primarily tries to shock the well-behaved Italian audience with the free-for-all nonsense of the hippie movement (free sex and all that nonsense). And then, of course, the abuse of women. Ultimately, it becomes incredibly boring, as the murders are anything but exciting and none of the characters are remotely sympathetic. Ultimately, it becomes a rather weak retelling of Edgar Allan Poe's The Black Cat.

Edwige Fenech is certainly not a sight to behold, but I didn't find her portrayed particularly attractively. My restoration had excellent image quality, which only served to highlight how poorly lit the locations were. While Argento wisely decided to film exclusively on location and Mario Bava was a perfectionist with the lighting, most gialli use horribly flat, TV-soap-like lighting.

Not much to it, then.
