Surprisingly fun for an obscure TV movie in which 'The Fonz' (Henry Winkler) directs Dolly Parton for a country-style Christmas fairy tale. It has a nice kind of cheesiness, with an absurd story involving abandoned orphans and an evil witch. But precisely because everything is just a little too much, it actually works quite well. Dolly crawls back into an old-fashioned log cabin with her adopted darlings, strumming or playing new songs by the fire. None of the villagers bat an eyelid when the witch uses her 'mountain magic' in a classic diner. And somewhere in the woods, the mythical Mountain Dan rides his horse. Tolerance for Parton's music is a must, because she sings a tune in almost every scene with lyrics like: 'I'm dreaming of a smoky mountain Christmas with nothing much that money buys but everything worth while in life.' Merry Christmas, reader.

A delightfully absurd story that can't be taken seriously for a moment, Dolly Parton certainly conveys the Christmas spirit with her songs.

Quite fun to watch once, a film that doesn't take itself too seriously and regularly pushes the boundaries.

2.5*
