Metaal en Melancholie plot
"Peru is made of metal and melancholy"
Almost twenty years after her departure, director Heddy Honigmann shot the documentary road movie Metal and Melancholy in her native city of Lima. In Lima, the capital of Peru with more than seven million inhabitants, the economy continued to deteriorate. Members of the middle classes can barely keep their heads above water with their meager salaries. In the hope of a better future, many Peruvians try to earn a little extra as a taxi driver. A job for which, given the fierce competition, a good portion of fighting spirit is required. Metal and Melancholy portrays some of these taxi drivers. The film takes the viewer through the streets of Lima by taxi and, through the drivers, gives an idea of the many ingenious ways to survive, of passion and zest for life.
