The Jazz Loft according to W. Eugene Smith plot

"Art, obsession and anxiety permeate a dilapidated Manhattan loft building in Mid-century"

For years, LIFE/Magnum photographer W. Eugene Smith lived in a creaky loft on 6th Avenue in Manhattan. Below him lived composer/arranger Hall Overton, above him famous jazz jam sessions were held until the morning hours. Jazz pianist Thelonious Monk rehearsed there with Overton for the famous album The Thelonious Monk Orchestra at Town Hall (1959). Smith obsessively documented what happened in the old building between 1957 and 1965. He shot about ten thousand photos and made thousands of hours of sound recordings. Not only from the jam sessions, but also from his own telephone conversations and the radio. This time capsule is at the heart of the documentary, which mainly focuses on the life and career of perfectionist Smith, a workaholic who kept himself alive with amphetamines and sleeping pills.
