Through the Back Door plot
Belgium, 1903. Widow Bodamere remarries a wealthy American, who decides that her daughter Marie should stay behind with her nanny Jeanne. Years later, mother returns to pick up her child, but Jeanne does not want to give her up and tells that Marie is dead. When Belgium is invaded by the Germans in 1914, Jeanne sends Marie to America, where she goes in search of her mother.
