Sound cast.

It may be a bit lame to judge a film from 1933 on its datedness, but it is fair. Because how would such a film be received today if it were broadcast on television, for example? Probably not very well. Apart from the occasional stray Alice fan, there is little more to discover here, even for cinephiles, than the second oldest film version of the famous story. Technically, it is extremely inconsistent, and that last word says it all. Sometimes it looks great and sometimes truly awful. From the make-up to the sets. The sounding cast also varies considerably in level.

Fail.

I bought the DVD once in Hamburg because of my Cary Grant collection. Now I finally got around to watching it. I think this charming product is worth a good grade. Cary is not externally recognizable in his rather exuberant role as the mock turtle, there are a few acting gems, but the whole thing is also somewhat inconsistent. As a representation of Carroll's beautiful fantasies it works, but not all the tricks are equally strong. I have also seen much better ones from that time.

I think Charlotte Henry is a good, credible Alice. The Queen of Hearts is brilliant, as is that poor white knight who keeps falling off his horse, poor thing. I also thought the rival chess queens were beautifully done. WC Fields as Humpty Dumpty is an experience in itself.

My DVD also contains the 1915 film adaptation. I'll keep that in mind for now.
