Sadie Thompson, a woman with a turbulent, frivolous past, arrives at Pago-Pago to start a new life. She makes every effort to limit her self-indulgent lifestyle as much as possible, which is not easy for her, given that there are many Marines on the South Sea island. She falls in love with Sergeant Timothy O'Hara, much to the dismay of Alfred Davidson, a zealous missionary who, after converting her, wants to keep Sadie for herself.
