After years of waiting, it appears that August (Richard Widmark) and Isolde (Doris Day) Poole are unable to have children, and they enroll at an adoption agency. Estelle Novick (Gia Scala) is the lady who must investigate whether the couple is suitable for adoption. Due to a number of misunderstandings, she finds Augie unfit for fatherhood. To make Estelle change his mind, Augie asks her out to dinner, but the next morning he wakes up in a strange hotel with a big hangover. And a few months later Estelle is back on his doorstep. She is in need of money and pregnant...
