Wow what a unique movie! In five separate stories, the (fictional) ups and downs of four men and a woman who return from captivity after World War II are depicted in France. This film was made in 1949, right after World War II, so the whole setup feels very authentic. As a spectator you feel that you are watching a film that also contains a kind of processing of the war in all its facets; the abomination, the petty bourgeoisie, the forgiveness, the greatness, the hypocrisy, in short an enlargement of everything that is human. A unique war film that zooms in on the psychology of a society in need of reconstruction. Very realistic in design, beautifully filmed, and it does not bother that different directors are at work. The five gems form one whole.

Not only because well-known filmmakers were in the director's chair (and/or writer's chair) and not only because this 5-disc film is performed by well-known names such as Bernard Blier, Louis Jouvet, Serge Reggiani and others, but especially because the theme was set in 1949, 4 years after World War II, was so radically topical and examples as they are cited are so vivid and realistic: the adaptation of ex-convicts to their former but especially new living conditions and also the adaptation of those who remained at home. From a heartless reception to the realization that war turns people, both friend and foe, into inhumans, the hypocrisy and ludicrous tributes that people often deal with, the refusal to realize that life can go on without hatred, to the few who find happiness.

Atmospheric film with many thoughts and actually also recommendations. The phenomenon is not out of the world yet.
