According to Selma, love is 'the worst of all natural disasters'. The logic is simple: mother died 'death of love' (as it is called) at the birth of Selma in childbirth. If love can cause such a thing, it cannot be trusted. Selma swears by 'science'; it is clear and predictable. The Nobel Prize is her goal. Life seems to confirm her theory about love. Aunt Nora has so much trouble with her fiancé that the wedding is postponed again and again. Boys have reptilian brains. And despite the pact she once made with her friends -never interested in boys- the other girls are just as idiotic these days. Since this summer they've been 'boy hunting', trying to tongue kiss (with disastrous outcome) and talking about nothing else. In fellow student Andy, she finds a kindred soul with whom she can discuss scientific questions. One research topic is presented to them by 'the Swede', a young man from the city: what color is milk inside?
