Valerka (Pavel Nazarov) and Galja (Dinara Drukarova) are twelve years old in 1947 and they live in a mining town near Vladivostok in Siberia. Many Soviet refugees and Japanese prisoners of war live there. Life is marked by fear, abject poverty, prostitution, black trade and terror.
