This is already the seventh film I have seen by Robbe-Grillet, and also by far his weakest. This film simply failed to captivate me. Visually, it also offered so little. I missed those beautiful erotic scenes like in "L'Éden et Après (1970)," which remains his finest film to me. The dance scene at the beginning was quite beautiful, though. It immediately reminded me of a similar dance scene in "L'Année Dernière à Marienbad (1961)," a film directed by Alain Resnais, admittedly, but based on a screenplay by Robbe-Grillet.

So, "La Belle Captive" is a disappointing film. The next and final film by this director on my schedule is "Gradiva," a film from which I don't expect much given the low average rating.

Crazy stuff.

Yes, the surreal atmosphere is skillfully portrayed, but the little voice in the back of my head complains that it is also barely distinguishable from a standard, overpretentious piece of work by a first-year film student. Yes, the ladies are beautiful, but we get to see disappointingly little of them. Arielle Dombasle, in particular, appears only very briefly.

Certainly one of the most beautiful names of a movie character ever Sara Zeitgeist.
