Sing Street plot

"Boy meets girl. Girl unimpressed. Boy starts band."

'Sing Street' is set in 1985 where we follow 14-year-old Conor (Ferdia Walsch-Peelo) who, when his parents can't afford it anymore, moves from a private school to a rough public school in Dublin. At school he has to deal with a strict headmaster and at home his parents do nothing but argue. His escape is the music, which he inherits from his older brother Brendan (Jack Reynor). When he meets the beautiful Raphina (Lucy Boynton), Conor falls in love instantly. He asks if she wants to play in his band's music video. Conor will have to act quickly to put together a formation, because the band he is talking about to impress Raphina does not yet exist.

Just turned it on in a crazy mood. This isn't really my genre at all, but somehow I got a good feeling about the plot above. Maybe the 80s had something to do with it, always good. Especially when it is combined with music from that time.

In addition, I often find films that are set in problem schools interesting. I was sold from the very first minute. The young Brendan is very likeable and excellently cast. At first sight I would classify the band members he gathers as misfits, and certainly not heroes. But little by little they sure did. And then there's the gorgeous Raphina. I would walk through fire for a girl like that.

The latter of course helps with my personal involvement, but the story is actually much too sweet. But because of the enormous enthusiasm that the film radiates, I like to take it for granted. I'm more into house music and the like, but really every song that Sing Street plays hits the mark. Kind of hate that alternative singer-songwriter stuff, but got a little bit more respect.

The ending is also beautiful and closes this feel-good film perfectly. Stumbled upon this film by accident, and it turns out to be one of the surprises of the year as far as I'm concerned.

An irresistible tribute to the music of the 80s and at the same time a wonderful coming-of-age film, as they can only be made in the United Kingdom. Director John Carney previously managed to convince within the genre with Once and Begin Again and now delivers a tasty cocktail of music, romance and humor. The songs are again very clever and catchy; it's especially nice to hear and see the band that the protagonists form the different styles of pop music of the 80s. In addition, the characters are very likeable.

Wonderful movie, highly recommended. Begin Again by this director was also such a pleasant surprise, but this one is even better. This time, Carney doesn't need any famous headlines for the lead roles to enchant us either. Sharp humour, good music (pity that the last songs are a bit less), characters you would like to believe in and above all a perfect revival of that typical eighties atmosphere. I love it. Those who want to see good, authentic films from Europe have mainly come out in Denmark and Ireland in recent years, with Spain as a close third.
