Thought it was an entertaining Thai horror film, in which I see some comparisons with Final Destination. But then in a Voodoo way. There is no real story, but the curses and the filth in the film are well put together and sometimes it is a painful grimace and some things are quite filthy: for example the one with those eels, then you also think WTF?? The scaryness is actually not too bad. It is more about the sadism here.

Great snack.

3.5*

Not possible.

The not bad average it still gets (although failing) I simply find incomprehensible for such a cheap piece of junk that this film is. Perhaps the charm still appeals to a specific audience. I didn't know in advance what I was getting into. I should have seen the entire trilogy, which I stopped after this film.

What is striking about the film is that it is simply almost impossible to get through. Boredom at its best. There is very little in this film that can be experienced as somewhat impressive or impressive. Everything looks rather easy, simple and sad. Scenes that come across as sentimental are too ridiculous for words. Combined with acting that really does not fit in the film, the film gave me a rather uncomfortable feeling quite early on.

The scenario is still playable. It's a matter of pressing the right buttons to make it an entertaining, spooky whole. Director Jitnukul, however, opts for a rather chaotic approach that makes the film, very directly put, rather shitty. The atmosphere is chopped up. There is no tension at all. The characters are incredibly boring (and overly exaggerated) and the stylization simply doesn't move forward.

In short, a film that I had to work hard to get through. Because the story still has something to offer, I will not give it the lowest score, but I would have certainly considered it. The film reminded me of the somewhat cheaper, strongly exaggerated productions of Miike but without humor and edgy images. The lifeless, completely colorless visual content is however a characteristic that both films share.

Those (action) or horror films from say Thailand, Malaysia or Indonesia can sometimes be surprisingly strong, often interspersed with a lot of brutal violence or gore. This Art of the devil unfortunately does not fall under that category. This film lacks clear tension or atmosphere. A not very interesting plot and just as few captivating characters do the rest. It also all starts so slowly that the sentence is soon over.

It is also sometimes in the editing with present and past, separated with color and black and white images. It feels like a mess. The horror is also hard to find. We don't get much further than some screaming (annoying) girls. One that is also quickly forgotten. With black magic you can go in many directions, usually the wrong direction...
