India before independence, in a carpet factory somewhere in the countryside near Calcutta. For Ravi and Masha, two children forced to work there, this is the beginning of a tragic love story. Little Ravi soon realizes that money determines whether you are a free man or a slave, ambitious and determined he works his way from simple laborer to the best carpet-maker in the factory, with only one goal in mind: to leave the factory as soon as possible. . But when he learns that the department manager wants to sell Masha to a trafficker, he sacrifices all his savings to buy her freedom. When she leaves, Masha promises to meet him every full moon at the largest shiva shrine in Calcutta. Years later, it is a young man who leaves the factory and heads for the temple. Masha, who has become a popular dancer in one of the city's many brothels, also visits the temple in hopes that Ravi will be there too. But fate seems to have turned against their love...
