The film is atmospherically shot but is otherwise not very surprising, which makes the course guessable. Little happens at the end, which makes it less suspenseful. The climax is striking and very surprising.

Silvia Hacherman is plagued by hallucinations from her past. She becomes increasingly confused and those around her are also affected by this...

The Perfume of the Lady in Black is not really a full-blooded Giallo. The film starts as a very tame apartment thriller in which not much interesting actually happens. The influence of Rosemary's Baby is very clearly present. Only after a good hour and a half is the first blood shed, but by then it is actually already as good as over. And of course there is a shocking finale a la Polanksi in which the entire environment of Silvia turns out to consist of a cannibalistic sect.

The title and poster are very misleading and the Italians also keep a pretty low profile. No eroticism, no murders, no black gloves (but then again the cannibalism compensates). Quality-wise there's not much wrong with it. Mimsy Farmer plays well and it's recorded quite nicely.

Indeed a disappointment! Visually the film is good. In terms of photography and use of color it is fine, but it still does not influence the atmosphere positively. The main reason is the bizarre story that actually does not make sense and does not create any tension at any time. There is all sorts of things in this film: from ghosts, hallucinations, conspiracies, sects to cannibalism. Too much of a good thing which is also reflected in a chaotically constructed story. Mysterious, yes, but it does not work. The ending also makes this clear in which the director chooses a separate ending, but given the course of the story you can place a lot of question marks about that. The giallo genre also seems a bit far-fetched to me, but there will be some characteristics. In any case, I never had the feeling that I was watching a giallo. The acting is mediocre. 4/10
