Meurtrière plot

Meurtrière is the second part of an experimental triptych about 'fear'. The film picks up where White Epilepsy left off. There is still unrest and fear. A woman and a man. What are they doing in the middle of the night? Why don't they talk? Was it a dream? A nightmare?

I find it difficult to say exactly what it is, but where White Epilepsy left me rather cold, this second part of Grandrieux's experimental trilogy managed to convince me completely. In itself, this film is just as experimental, but I feel that much more happened here and the intended atmosphere comes across much better.

In the beginning I still had my doubts, but the longer the film lasted, the more I became hypnotized by the stream of images that Grandrieux presented here. Strange, at times even quite creepy. Weird writhing bodies that eventually become so distorted that they only seem like abstract chunks of flesh, overlapping and morphing into each other, with a soundtrack that consists of strange ambient noises, inhuman growls and now and then some ambient. I wasn't completely done until the last 10 minutes. At that point, the movie becomes downright terrifying. That strange look that seems to be staring at you through your screen, the soundtrack that gets more aggressive and louder, I can only imagine how (even) much more effective this movie must have been on the big screen.

A cautious 4.5*.

Yep.

This is the better work. Doesn't provide the same feeling as his somewhat longer/larger films, but it comes close. Meurtrière is just much more hypnotic and is therefore actually an extreme form of visual asmr, the only thing missing is a voice-over by Jena Malone. Not that it was necessary because unlike his more recent "Unrest" this one is not only more visually interesting (not much, but there is just more to see), but also a lot more effective in terms of audio.

Delicious white noise and soundscapes in combination with the ever "distorting" naked ladies makes for a very artful whole as only our Philippe can make them. Wasn't very easy to find, but glad it didn't disappear from the face of the earth. Been looking forward to it for a while now. This one is also not really recommended, I think only fans of visual asmr and Grandrieux will find this interesting. Fortunately, there are still quite a few of them because these types of films are very unique.

4*
