"Nobody believes a liar...even when they're telling the truth."

When a young college student is brutally murdered, rumors spread quickly in Westlake Prep University. Not much later, Owen Matthews, a young student from England, arrives at the school. Owen soon becomes acquainted with the beautiful Dodger, his roommate Tom and a bunch of others. Together, the group invents a game for Halloween; they email everyone with the lie that the young student's killer (aka The Wolf) will strike again. However, Owen and the rest could not have foreseen the horrific consequences this simple joke would have.

A slasher, it seems from the start. But then a slasher that is worked out in a non-horror way. There are kills, though. The kills are not very explicitly depicted. They look pretty bloodless. The kills are therefore not the main component of the film. The main component consists of a game that is played by the students and gets out of hand. That game element provides all kinds of fanciful storylines. The kills are such an outlier. The film is therefore not a real slasher but rather a thriller-like whodunnit with an intended high mindfuck content.

It is a film with a lot of student-like fun. Bit much. A film with many surprising twists. Bit much. The large amount of twists and student jokes tire the story. There is always something. Another angle. A new suspicion. A new detail. There is so much that it affects the empathy and the tension. Somewhat mellowed by so much distraction, then inexorably disinterest sets in. Who cares. Well, I don't anymore from a certain point. I allowed everyone to leave the film in a slasher-like way. Without any preference on my part. No character is captivating enough to be sympathetic to. Although I have to admit that lead actress Lindy Booth did strike a sentimental chord.

No, this movie isn't exactly a nail biter. Yet there is no general feeling of lethargy. The movie is moving. That's the salvation. The speed protects you from a total fall into listlessness. The scenes are short. The actions are fast. The dialogues don't require much attention. That all helps with biting through after the decreased appetite. There is always just enough pull to not lose the red thread.

'Cry Wolf' is just a so-so movie.

After so many years of memorable horror villains, what's so terrifying about a guy in a neon orange ski mask and a camouflage jacket?

The first piece of Cry Wolf is solid, but the second piece is miserable.

The characters are insufferable and the plot is incredibly stupid. It has a few moments, but this movie is really bad.

Mediocre.

Jeff Wadlow in one of his earlier projects. Looks like the best man outside of Blumhouse could actually tell stories. His newer films also try to do that, but they often look a bit messy. However, in terms of entertainment, they can be called a bit nicer, which is missing in this film.

Nice that space has been made to bring a real story to life with plot twists and surprises. Only it is all presented so boringly, while Wadlow in his later years was nice and refreshing to direct. Within Cry_Wolf there is no question of that, because the environment is mainly bare and the pace of the direction only gets in the way of the film.

It all feels quite dusty and chewed up. A film that you actually find in every television episode in the same kind of setting. What the film also lacks are some memorable characters that can spice up the story itself. There is little mention of that in this film, while the foundation is quite interesting. That is always a pity.

Horror isn't really the focus of the film, but once Wadlow walks into that area, there are some nice scenes in between. That is what the film must mainly rely on, as well as that I was surprised by the outcome of the film. Despite all the surprises, the rest of the film is just not up to par, which makes the seat a bit tough. Unfortunately.
