Excellent film noir set in Louisiana, amidst swampy marshes and plantations. The Creole/Cajun culture is also typical. A word of French is spoken every now and then and the accordion music is never far away. These environmental elements contribute to the sultry character of the story, in which Merle Oberon, as an alien suffering object, seems to find herself literally and figuratively in the middle of quicksand. A strange lady, by the way, Merle Oberon. Not bad-looking, mysterious appearance, and an intense life story when you look up her bio. Furthermore, it is especially enjoyable to the dirty plans of Thomas Mitchell and Elisha Cook Jr as his henchman.

Director André DeToth - with a name like that this man should have made horror films - was unknown to me but I really enjoyed the work he did here with cinematographers John J. Mescall (who also worked with James Whale) and Archie Stout. Beautiful camera movements - and angles, a play of light and shadow in the gothic mansion contribute to the underlying tension. Worth mentioning is the contribution of Joan Harrison (known for her collaboration with Hitchcock) to the script as well as the score by Miklos Rozsa. Big names indeed.
All the elements that determine the level of a film are good in this film and together give a surplus. Dark Waters is not exactly known as a classic, and that makes it perhaps even more fun to discover this film. Watch out for the quicksand.
