House of Cards plot

After the resignation of Margaret Thatcher, Henry Collingridge has become the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom: he is a somewhat colorless figure who wants to follow a slightly progressive course. He wins the election, but the Conservative Party has suffered heavy losses. His chief whip, Francis Urquhart, has a proposal for a cabinet reshuffle that would also include him in a ministerial post, as promised by the prime minister several months ago. Collingridge dismisses his proposal and leaves everything as it is because, after this poor election result, he wants to radiate stability. Urquhart decides to take revenge.

Francis Urquhart is a Machiavellianist. He puts on the mask of a loyal party member, but like a Shakespearean villain, he eliminates anyone who stands between him and the throne. His wife is like Lady Macbeth, the manipulator in the background. Politics is a cynical power play for unscrupulous strategists.

The media play a crucial role because they influence public opinion. Newspapers are biased and sensational. A sex, money or drug scandal usually has an underlying reason. It's a way to take out a political rival.

The elitist atmosphere of British politics is immediately there. Historic buildings in Westminster serve as the backdrop, but interior scenes have also been shot in Manchester. During Question Time, the House of Commons is noisy like a children's playground. Coalitions are as shaky as a house of cards.

Ian Richardson plays the part of his life as the imperious Tory. He breaks through the fourth wall to inform the viewer of his plans. The green-eyed Susannah Harker is also impressive as the young journalist in search of a “friend in high places”. A drama like this makes you look at the political milieu in a different way.
