Victory plot

"Now is the time for heroes."

1943. During the Second World War, officers from various allied countries are imprisoned by the Nazis in Germany. They find their only pastime in football. The team is led by former professional footballer captain John Colby. Impressed by the team, the German Major Von Steiner proposes to organize a match between the POWs and the guards. However, Nazi Germany wants to go bigger and sees it as a good propaganda stunt to let the prisoners in Paris play against Germany's national team. What the Germans do not realize, however, is that they are playing into the hands of the prisoners of war...

The success of a film like this stands or falls with how credible the necessary Hollywood clichés are presented. And I must say that they do work on this film, and that the story remains captivating from beginning to end.

So I don't have to tell you that it is very predictable here and there. Although I expected that they would escape after the match. And other clichés don't come up too much, so they don't irritate either.

The choice for Stallone is remarkable to say the least, but certainly successful. Stallone does one of his best roles here. His modest appearance contributes to the film. Caine is also doing great.
Quite lucky that the rest of the cast didn't get too much text, because that would have marred it. That they just do what they are good at: football.

In the beginning, the film seems to get a bit more content. The Wehrmacht officer and the football captain start talking about their common destiny. It's a pity that this track is not further developed in the film, because that could have given it a bit more color.

You can guess that few or no languages are spoken besides English. If one were to remake such a film today, one would have an eye for it.

The delayed images on the field are not all necessary. Some indeed help to better represent certain football actions, others are completely unnecessary.

By the way: At the start of the match they play "Deutschland Über Alles" as the national anthem. That is the current German national anthem. During the war the Horst Wessel was used. If this song had been used in the film, the film should have been banned in Germany and Austria.

Entertaining.

The film has a fun and original story. There is also the excellent cast, which has a nice mix between strong actors (such as a Michael Caine) and some good football players (of course I mean Pélé in the first place). The football scenes didn't always look nice, but there were still some things that were portrayed quite nicely.

Nice film in which a number of prisoners of war participate in a football match during the second world war. A somewhat curious mix between a war film and a sports film. And although it is sometimes a bit unbalanced, it easily looks away (partly due to the fine cast). The football match takes up a large part of the playing time.
