Zin-mi lives with her hardworking parents in North Korea, a country where the country's deceased leaders stay to watch over them, so to speak - their ubiquitous portraits hang in living rooms, at school and even on the subway. Zin-mi is on the cusp of joining the Korean Children's Union, an equivalent of the organizations in most communist countries, until the fall of the Berlin Wall. For Zin-mi, this union depicts her becoming part of a society where mature things like hard work and taking responsibility for oneself are essential.
