Based on a True Story plot
On a hot August afternoon in 1972, John Wojtowicz attempts to rob a branch of the Chase Manhattan Bank in Brooklyn. With the money, it turns out, he wants to pay for his lover's sex change. The robbery turns into a drama. A few years later, as a result of these events, a feature film with Al Pacino in the lead role was made: Dog Day Afternoon. The film begins with the sentence: based on a true story. This is correct, only John Wojtowicz, as the only person involved, never cooperated with the filmmakers. Filmmaker Walter Stokman sees the film, believes the story but is curious about the version of the real protagonist. 'Based on a True Story? reconstructs this bank robbery from 1972 based on direct testimony. Wojtowicz takes the lead with his version of the story, but he slowly loses control when the others come up with different versions.
