Fascinating adventure film from the British that gradually becomes grimmer, with excellent acting.

Where the survivors of a plane crash end up in a territory of not very friendly baboons

themselves display rather ape rock behavior. Actress Susannah York plays a very naive blonde.

The poster is rather misleading. I expected more adventure in this film. But it has become a survival film about a group of people who crash their plane in the desert. The atmosphere is very bizarre after that. People start to do something philosophical, there are some who mentally slide away, ... But the actors are not particularly strong, so it makes little impression. Visually it is also just a group of actors in the desert with the occasional group of baboons. It all seems rather clumsy with characters that are not particularly sympathetic. It also seems that they start to lose their humanity after a few days.

Strong and interesting survival film in which a plane crashes in the Kalahari desert and the passengers have to try to survive. The comparison with The Flight of the Phoenix (1965) (3.5*) is easily made but I found this one a lot rougher and grimier.
The survivors fall back on their primal instincts and primitive social roles. O'Brien becomes the hunter and therefore also the leader of the group and the one the woman falls for. The woman is always looking for protection and security and will sexually choose the strongest. A lot of animals are also killed throughout the film, ranging from baboons to a gazelle to a zebra. Although it seems to be mainly (and fortunately) the work of special effects and it is often offscreen. It does look realistic.
The fate of some of the survivors (the doctor and the pilot) is not entirely clear. And I liked the harsh ending. You may wonder why O'Brien chose to stay behind alone; his primitive instincts overcame his humanity, you might say. Definitely recommended.

Edit --- the DVD back cover states the following.... : A small plane crashes n the vicinity of a remote African village. Unfortunately, the tribe's inhabitants are not very peaceful, and they target the survivors ... This is completely incorrect. There is no mention of the locals posing a threat at all.
