A fairly atmospheric, Gothic horror from director Antonio Margheriti (best known for "Video Nasty" Apocalypse Domani). He made more films during this period with Barbara Steele, among others.
The setting of the medieval castle with its secret passages and trap doors is particularly well found.
Rossana Podestà's acting is sometimes a bit hysterical, but she has a pretty face and does what she was hired to do (play a scream queen). Georges Rivière gives a solid performance, and despite his somewhat minor role, Christopher Lee still manages to impress, this time as a battered museum curator. It's just a shame they didn't just let him speak for themselves in the English dub. Perhaps they thought his British accent didn't fit (the character has a German background/nationality).
The film lags a bit here and there, and there's not much to experience, but the payoff with the horrific revelation and the inferno (which, incidentally, is seen in many classic horror films) is definitely worth it. Thumbs up to the makeup artist who created the deformed head.
A little less colorful (literally and figuratively) than a Bava horror, but still worth it for Italian fans.
