Apparently movies shot straight to VHS are quite disappointing to me. I haven't seen that many yet, but the ones I saw were not above average. The Ripper is also a movie shot on VHS and like the previous movies it all looks bad. There is also no tempo at all.

Fortunately, The Ripper does have Tom Savini (who doesn't act very well) and a nice portion of gore, who manage to pull the film just above average.

Nice video, but nothing more than that!

3*

Interesting take on the Jack the Ripper phenomenon. As Stephan73 has already said, it doesn't look all that sparkly and lively. The Camcorder-Coppola Crowd knew how to put together a story, but not how to handle a camera, or use light!...

Still, the story is funny, and the gore is very rewarding! Because -as any self-respecting gorehound knows- Tom Savini is NOT famous for his acting talent, but IS for his amazing special effects! Nothing big, or that requires a million dollar budget, but nice and small and nice and rancid, that's Tom Savini! Who can forget the exploding zombie in Dawn of the Dead (which he also had a cameo in himself as 'Machete'!!)? Or the exploding zombie in Day of the Dead? The 'arrow through Kevin Bacon's throat' in Friday the 13th? The scalped ladies and the exploding head (by Tom Savini himself!) in Maniac? All on a budget, and all great!! None of that here, by the way. No exploding bodies this time, but a lot of cutting, dissecting and gutting action. And that is also entrusted to our Tom.

Although, Stephan73 is right that Savini - who occasionally lands a cool cult film role next to his fx career! - does not come out very well. Then I think it's better as Sex Machine in From Dusk Till Dawn!! BUT next to all the other obvious amateurs, he still stands out quite positively, considering that he only has a glorified cameo!

All in all a nice film about an old and still inspiring phenomenon, Jack The Ripper! One more comment: which ring finger was that gaudy ring on again????
