Bad horror.

If you watch the beginning, you know what to expect. Especially those clumsy, but mostly stupid characters, that's what it says. There are also some dead bodies right from the start. So what do you hear then... screaming, but in the most unconvincing, stupid way. Truly awful. The murders are also so clumsy and laughable. The film is much more entertaining compared to Virus (another Mattei film), and the story flowed a bit better. But still, the film is far from good. 1.0.

Italian exploitation of a very low level.

In a post-apocalyptic world, mutated rats crave human flesh. The how and why are revealed in this terrible film. It's cheaply produced junk.

Bad acting. Of course. Bad dialogue. Of course. No tension. Of course. The rats that are the scare factor in this film don't look threatening. Not even when they're threatening.

The characters are made of cardboard and utterly stupid. The female characters also scream at a tremendous volume. They do this frequently and usually for no reason. It's incredibly annoying.

The SFX are mediocre. A fair bit of gore here and there. But more often than not, it fails. Mediocre. Mediocre.

The story is meant to be serious, so it's tongue-in-cheek and lacks any real substance. The script probably wasn't long enough. It's really nothing more than a run-around in a dilapidated warehouse. It is, however, a great location. A location that lends itself perfectly to horror. Oppressive and atmospheric. Unfortunately, these qualities of the location are barely utilized in this film.

Finally, I'd like to mention the ridiculous twist at the end. It's so nonsensical that it's probably the only part of the film that will stick.

In itself, this is a fine Italian take on Night of the Living Dead, but with rats instead of zombies. The English dub is hilariously stiff, but perhaps the original dialogue wasn't very strong to begin with. As a so-bad-it's-good film, it's perfectly doable. Some great gore scenes too! And as far as I'm concerned, a classic ending!

For the rat lovers—and I was a bit worried—these are albino rats, dipped in some brown goo. The creatures are more concerned with cleaning themselves than attacking B-list actors. The "attacking" rats are thrown from a few meters away toward the actors, or they empty a few bags of rats from a height of three meters. A few rats also fall prey to pyrotechnics. Yes, those Italian filmmakers with their love of animals, too. Be warned!
