Not the first film adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper's novel, but a good one nonetheless. The story takes place in the year 1757. The United Kingdom and France are at war, and the war is also being waged on the North American continent. Against this backdrop, the trapper Hawkeye, together with the Mohicans Chingachgook and Uncas, takes up arms against the villainous Huron Magua, who is active for the French camp and has abducted the two daughters of an English colonel.

The film remains fairly faithful to the novel. Only at the end does the film allow itself to deviate from the original story. That is not disturbing. The film is perfectly streamlined and has dynamics. The film has pace and has few quiet moments. Randolph Scott plays the role of Hawkeye. Just like in his westerns, he plays the hero in a stoic way. He is cool, you could say. His Mohican companions are played by white actors, just like Magua. Not unusual at the time, but it makes it somewhat difficult to empathize with the Indian characters.

Also fun to mention is that parts of Max Steiner's score from King Kong (1933) are used in this film. They are mainly audible during the action scenes. Another fun fact that implies another connection to King Kong is that Bruce Cabot, who plays the role of Magua here, played the role of John Driscoll in King Kong.

Nowadays, Michael Mann's version is of course the best-known film adaptation of The Last of the Mohicans. More modern in design, flashier and also a good film. However, the 1936 film adaptation holds up well and, in my opinion, is barely inferior to the one from 1992.
