Moeder Dao, de Schildpadgelijkende plot
Documentary composition of fragments from old nitrate films about the former Dutch East Indies. The film focuses on the way in which the Netherlands ran its colony in the period 1912 - 1933, how she saw it as a colonial enterprise and what the balance of power was like at the time. The recordings, mostly made for propaganda purposes, reflect the colonial mentality of the past and show the European dressed in a white tropical suit, always giving directions, missionary or administrator. A special soundtrack with natural sounds, native music and poetry has been added to the images recorded without sound.

More fascinating than I expected, which is mainly due to the great sound. In particular, the often present humming in the background gives the film an ominous character, which of course fits with everything that humans do to each other and animals in this film. The poetry seems almost resigned, which gives the images a lugubrious character.
