De Loteling plot

1833, somewhere in the Flemish Kempen. Conscription was not yet universal at that time and recruitment is done by lottery, a measure that is not popular with the population. However, Jan, one of the many who awaits the same fate, is lucky and sets himself free. But for a hefty sum of money, he lets himself be tempted to take the place of a rich young man. He soon regrets his decision. His money is stolen and he becomes acquainted with a lot of inhumane conditions.

One of those classics that I sometimes saw on VHS at my grandmother's. Typical Flemish film about the notorious lottery system in which every young man saw his life marked by being called up or exempted from the service via a glorified tombola. The fact that the rich could buy themselves out is not something that shocked me, but what struck me more is the fact that the absentee left a huge job gap for the family.

Moving film by the unfortunate Jan Braems, which over time becomes more of a swan song. In that respect, a bit too melodramatic for my liking, with Jan tumbling from one setback to another and transforming from a strong man into a real loser. Although Jan may have never seen so much money together, I also found it strange why he had to take that money to the army. Another lottery ticket may also not have had a penny in its pocket. After all, the money was meant for his future, not to cover his "expenses" while on duty.

In addition, a lot of attention is paid to the devout Catholic faith of that time, the discriminatory yoke in the army and, of course, Katrientje's unconditional love for her Jan. Their wandering was beautifully portrayed in the beautiful Kempen landscape. Idyllic, were it not for the lack of cheerfulness ...

Nice film in which a poor farmer's son joins the army for payment. Although story-technically enough happened, the film didn't manage to get me with everything. This historical drama manages to portray a fine era. The decoration and the camera work are also good.

Like this.

Nice dramatic time frame. Theft, social injustice, baby murder, rape,.. You name it. De Loteling serves it all up in about 80 minutes.

It seems overkill. That's it for me too, but nevertheless it's not really bad. All in all, it's not too bad for a stiff Flemish peasant film. The fact of the lottery is only briefly touched upon. It is the calvary that the film tries to give a heart. Sometimes a bit too stiff but in the end it works out somewhat.

2.5
