I don't know what's most disappointing about this: the talentless lead, the unfunny slapstick, or the absence of any kind of tension or creepiness. Set design and photography are beautiful and the cast is impressive, but I just can't seem to get even for a moment interested in what might be going on in Femm Castle or who is actually the culprit, even though I love films with haunted houses such as The cat and the canary (1939) and The haunting (1963). It's always nice to see Robert Morley, Joyce Grenfell and Mervyn Johns, so whatever appreciation I have for this film is purely their fault, but otherwise this is a big letdown. (Maybe I should have known better, because William Castle + Hammer = the worst of both worlds.)
