A Ring of Endless Light plot

Vicky will spend the vacation on the island with her grandfather. Her brother collects insects and her sister studies the stars. She herself is more interested in boys and in between tries to study for her entrance exam in physics. A boy on the island works with dolphins and fears that one of the ships nearby is fishing with driftnets, which entangle the dolphins. Being around the dolphins, she gets the feeling that she fully understands the animals. It frightens her, but also opens her eyes to an unknown world. She is attracted to both the dolphin boy and the drift fisherman's son.

A reasonable youth film.

The story in the film differs from the novel. In the novel, Vicky and her family knew that Grandpa had leukemia. In addition, Vicky had an older brother and sister. She became interested in a third boy, and driftnets were out of the question. Kirsten Storms was initially cast in the role of Vicky. Ultimately it was decided to go for Mischa Barton.

Fans of the novel were unpleasantly surprised after watching this film. This is due to the various adjustments. Personally, I have never read the book, but I agree with most of the criticism. The cast in particular is not well composed. Despite the fact that Scarlett Pomers plays Vicky's younger sister, she comes across as very mature in the film in an exaggerated way. The dolphins are entertaining, but the rest of the story doesn't have much in store.

2.5 *
