Another typical Iwaitje. Young people take center stage again and a nice dreamy atmosphere.

The film follows three patients of a psychiatric institution. Who one day decide to walk over a wall, at first they don't go that far but eventually they go further and further. Iwai turns it into a kind of road movie about three pleasantly crazy people. The film was not successful everywhere, Asano's nightmares added little and visually it was sometimes a bit lackluster. But the nice iwai atmosphere and the phenomenal ending still make for a solid 3.5*.

I saw Hana to Alice five years ago, April Story four years ago, both of which I liked and now only my third Iwai. By the way, also the first message in five years about this film. And even though this film scores in the middle segment for me, this neglect of Iwai feels unjustified.

This is also a pleasant video. Always nice to see such an exploration of the world from an unusual point of view. In that respect, this is a bit reminiscent of a film like Air Doll by Koreeda.

Iwai does feel very light, despite the fact that the subject is actually quite heavy, and that is quite nice. Partly also due to the very pleasant soundtrack. In terms of images it varies, but the final scene with all the feathers in backlight was phenomenal. As a downside I would like to mention the voice of the main character, which is quite irritating.

In the end I keep it at 3.5*, even though the film is close to half an extra. Maybe someday during a revision.

Surprising.

It doesn't happen often, especially at this stage of my reviews (doubty 4* films), but it's definitely an increase for a film. I didn't really like this Iwai that much anymore, but it turned out to be a very cool and creative film, where the HD upgrade certainly has added value.

A psych ward drama mixed with an old child's game, it produces some beautiful scenes and a fun/different road movie. The limited length in particular speaks in favor of Picnic, because it does not require endless imagination.

The actors are strong, visually it is enjoyable and Iwai's soundtrack also does its job, although it is not music that I would put on outside of the film. And not a second too long, which is also something other films can learn from. Half an extra for this one, actually one of Iwai's best films.

4.5* and a extensive review
