Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion is an Italian crime thriller from the Giallo era. While the film contains a few nods to the Giallo (the yellow pulp novel, for example), it is certainly not a Giallo. It even had a slightly Orwellian feel to it at times, especially with all the espionage and political prisoners.

The film tells the story of a police inspector who murders his mistress and deliberately leaves traces. Gian Maria Volontè and Florinda Bolkan played their roles well. Volontè almost resembled Mussolini during the speeches, with all that shouting.

I managed to acquire a beautiful 4K restoration of the film. It's shot in a unique and typically Italian style. The numerous point-of-view shots are somewhat reminiscent of Giallo. There's also good music by Ennio Morricone and Bruno Nicolai, though perhaps a bit too Western-esque.

An interesting film about the inviolability of those in power, with a pleasant Italian atmosphere.

Talk about an original script!

The story is intriguing from beginning to end and Gian Maria Volontè's acting is phenomenal.

A bit more suspense and better counterplay would have earned the film four stars. 7.5/10

A remarkable police/crime film. It felt like watching a Luis Bunuel film that turns an unusual murder story into a razor-sharp satire. It's no coincidence that the film ends with a quote from Kafka. It's perfectly in that spirit. It's a murder story, but in reality, the corruption and hypocrisy of the ruling class and its armed wing (the police) are central. Above all, the film must be seen in the historical context in which it was made: post-May '68, with the student uprising still fresh in memory. In retrospect, the film is also a prophetic preview of the coming turbulent Italian decade, which would be rocked by countless bombings.

I hadn't read anything beforehand, so it only gradually dawned on me what a surreal scene I was watching. The protagonist is grotesque in his (moral) shortcomings, but turns out to be completely covered by an incompetent circle of yes-men who want to hide their own incompetence at all costs to keep the ranks closed and avoid being targeted. Or is it just a dream of the protagonist? In that respect, the film is open-ended. As if the filmmakers want to leave the possibility of a more just reality open to the viewer.
