"Sometimes the wrong side of the law is the right place to be."

Jesse James and his friends return from the war and want to settle in the small town of Liberty. There it appears that, for the construction of a railway, people want to buy the land of the peasants for little money. Because these do not give in, their houses are set on fire. That is the start of a new war, in which the James-Younger gang does everything they can to stop the construction of the railroad.

Highly romanticized and somewhat playful, story about Jesse James as a kind of cowboy version of Robin Hood. A little poetic freedom, I believe... real history wasn't that beautiful. And all that in a kind of TV movie with associated production value, and a list of b-list actors. Empty-headed entertainment for a Sunday evening.

Don't mind it either. Came by on TV last weekend but this Jesse James retelling turned out to be a no-brainer. More of a popcorn adventure film than a real western, with cringe-inducing dialogues, tasteless humor, a fluff-romance and Colin Farrell in the lead role so that the level certainly doesn't get too high. Also a film in which Jesse James always hits the spot and the others are always next to it. That opening scene at the end of the American Civil War in which the outlaw ends up alone behind enemy lines is too ridiculous for words.

Jesse James and the Younger gang are portrayed as Robin Hoods but the truth was completely different; history is quite taken aback. The modern jacket does not fit. The only one who still manages to add some color to the film is Timothy Dalton as Pinkerton.

A film like it could no longer be made, but it looks good. As expected, the clichés about romance, the civil war and the good guys vs the bad guys predominate, but it's still quite entertaining. Still, the viewer can expect more from such a 'western', certainly in 2001 when the genre was already quite chewed up, and certainly at the end, the miraculous escape.

As a footnote, because this is not due to the quality of the film, I must confess that, despite the historical flaws, the story still somewhat confronted the phenomenon of people, village communities and probably large parts of the 'south' that side with the Union - and who then had to live among the defeated Confederalists. The civil war has certainly never gone away with today's knowledge.
