A weak fantasy of black magic from the Full Moon Studios. It's all too ridiculous for words and the FX are amateurish. Those dinosaurs in that museum at the end reminded me of those old 60's Harryhausen movies, although the latter were more entertaining. And with actors like Brian Thompson (the bad guy from Cobra) and Jeffrey Combs, you already know what level it will be.

Charles Band is inspired by Doctor Strange, and delivers a campy story about interdimensional stuff, wizards, and time travel. It has a rather comic-like vibe, which is not surprising of course. You don't have to do it for the effects either, it's all very low budget, but this was still somewhat charming in its way. You can't take it seriously for a second, especially when Band goes on the explanation tour and tries to explain the whole mythos. It's not inherently more ridiculous than those Marvel movies, but in such a low-budget way you get away with it a little less. But that's not really meant as a criticism, more as an observation - as a B-movie this was quite watchable, although I like B-horror or B-thriller more than B-superheroes.

You can indeed compare this one with Dr. Strange (1978) who also receives a low rating (2.25) here. Don't be fooled by that. These aren't bad B movies. Both films are well put together and have their own fans. Study your scores on Imdb and you will see that about 10% give these films an even 10. a third give this film 7 and above and half do so with Dr. Strange. So there is definitely an audience for it. I think it's great movies myself. The acting is okay, the sound effects are neatly done, the graphic effects are very effective with minimal resources, the story is well put together, and the magic still has a bit of a fairytale touch. If you don't like these kinds of movies, feel free to skip them. But if you like older films of the fantasy genre then they are a treat. I enjoyed both.
