This is just a very nice Boll, you know. Lovely atmosphere, which I quickly develop a soft spot for anyway. In the middle of a forest, small village, a sheriff, strange atmosphere, a bit in Silent Hill style. Unfortunately Boll chooses to completely ruin certain scenes (the flashbacks) with that horrible visual effect, but otherwise just good viewing material. Very nice ending too. And so Uwe scores a pass again.

3*

Early Uwe. A very interesting director to follow from the beginning of his career, through the tumultuous middle part (2003-2008) and then returning to filmmaking as he once started. There is a very solid filmmaker in Uwe Boll, but an even better businessman. Solid is not enough in the film world. It is better to be an outspoken personality + universally hated, than to have no one pay attention to your solidity. After all, negativity also brings in the bones. In any case, Blackwoods testifies to a novice director who can handle a layered story very well, who (successfully or not) daringly jumps back and forth in time with it and (ugly or not) also plays with editing styles. Heart of America (2003) remains his best work in that respect and is fortunately recognized as such.

Old-fashioned design, but director Uwe Boll delivers a somewhat better film here than his previous projects. That's not difficult, because they were all crap. However, Blackwoods still has a number of ugly stylizations, of which the slow-motion in particular turns out to be confusing and amateurish. The acting is also not great, but once the story gets going, Boll manages to create a certain kind of atmosphere. The content is also very reminiscent of a predecessor of Vacancy, but with a smaller budget and a bit more psychological interference. The final approach is a surprise and the run-up is quite entertaining, but after half an hour I was struggling to concentrate because of the lack of tension and sensation.
