Greek, passionate tragedy in a modern setting.

The theme and the trio Mercouri-Perkins-Vallone, as well as the fame of the director, must certainly have given the film a lot of interest at the time.

Today, of course, there is a big year on it and one can rarely ignore that.

Nevertheless, still enjoyable with the fortunately not too theatrically presented love triangle and the intrigues that follow.

Beautiful settings and also attention to the contrast between the wealth of the shipowner's family and the poverty of the wives of the lost crew members.

Last night I started working on this Phaedra and with it a film that I actually didn't know, of which the name Perkins actually only seemed familiar to me and I therefore wanted to take a chance on a lost or forgotten classic. But that turned out not to be the case at all.

Yet the film does not start strangely with the shipping magnate and his party where the adoration for the lady in question is evident, but the film only really starts with the first meeting between Alexis and Phaedra, which is immediately of a certain level and an interaction that is both a certain tension when chemistry shows. Perkins is to a certain extent scary and layered as always and therefore something that fits perfectly with the cold but not entirely unhandsome Phaedra. And especially the chemistry between the two is what it's all about, something that is also quite good and intriguing at some moments where Alexis tends towards an Oedipus complex in how he looks up at her, and she is the pitfall of all pitfalls of the ladies has that it shouldn't be too easy. Thanos is at her feet but is too easy, Alexis is unreachable and that is exactly what she wants.

The criticism I read above is that Merkouri is no longer attractive, something that I think is not too bad because I have seen more questionable cases. A bigger problem, apart from the complex love-hate relationship and the terrible person that Phaedra turns out to be, is that apart from the complex moments between Phaedra and Alexis that are full of tension and well built up, the film is an extremely boring and long-winded whole in which surprisingly little happens and the possible potential between the two is nowhere near approached. This means that the film more than underlines the average score and I think that the film will certainly not receive a passing grade. The final verdict is disappointing and insufficient.
