The story of The Paper Boy is not the most original, with perhaps the twist that the psycho here is a boy of about twelve or fourteen or so. Johnny no longer has a mother and an absent father, and tries to worm his way into Melissa's family like a full-fledged stalker (with a serious Oedipus complex). That goes reasonably well at first, but it soon becomes clear that Johnny is a psychopathic nutcase who also does not belong in the family. But as soon as he is sent away, he really goes off the rails (and goes on a killing spree, although he had already killed before that). In that context, it is all done quite reasonably, including the acting in which Johnny also comes across as a reasonable psychopath. It is otherwise quite run-of-the-mill, with a somewhat unbelievable plot in which, for example, the police are also conspicuous by their absence - despite the fact that there is a body count in that town that would make you think of West Baltimore. Nevertheless, good entertainment.
