During World War I, the beautiful German master spy Helene von Lorbeer is sent to go undercover in London with a family of high-ranking British officials. The butler Valdar - also a spy - helps her send the information to Germany.

A very, very entertaining spy thriller that benefits enormously from the fact that the viewer is not told beforehand where the main characters' various loyalties lie (unless, like the New York Times critic of the time, you are of the opinion that "it is obvious […] that any spy as beautiful as Margaret Lindsay couldn't possibly be a German agent."). With his ambiguous gaze and insinuating grin, Boris Karloff is entirely in his element here, but Margaret Lindsay as the German spy in the family of a high-ranking British official is equally strong—it is a shame, though, that despite a career spanning 96 films in over 40 years, she never broke through as a leading actress and star. Apparently already the third adaptation of this plot, but as far as I am concerned, this B-movie is more exciting than many an A-movie from this decade.
