A tough cop embarks on a wild quest through the underworld when he discovers his daughter has been kidnapped. The kidnapper accidentally turns out to have the wrong girl, but isn't afraid to kill her if the sky-high ransom isn't paid.

If Kurosawa's "High and Low" (1963) were more like Charles Bronson's "Death Wish" (1974) (and looked much more low-budget). A single father (James Brolin) sees his curly-haired daughter mistakenly mistaken for a rich man's daughter and kidnapped by a criminal (Cliff Gorman). The car chase at the beginning (about 20 minutes) is especially worthwhile for the sultry atmosphere of honking cars, irritated commuters, and a father doing everything he can to get his child back. However, the tension doesn't last, as it suddenly becomes a drama film in which the two frustrated alpha males mainly talk tough and throw things. Pay particular attention to the racist undertones with which every ethnic minority in New York is ridiculed. The kidnapper turns out to be an angry white man for whom the viewer is also allowed to feel a little sympathy. Because doesn't he rightly feel a little passed over by "spics" and "niggers" in the urban jungle!? And in the end, everyone turns out to be completely insane, no matter which side of the law they're on.

I couldn't find this one, and since it was recently released in 4K by Kino, I was intrigued. I saw it on YouTube, where it's available in its entirety and relatively good quality.
It started off decently but quickly turned into a mediocre kidnapping story. It became increasingly bizarre and unbelievable, culminating in the whole affair with that corrupt ex-colleague from the police force. I also noticed how excessively many people were jogging in that city; it looked like a marathon.
There are much better films in this genre. It won't be joining my collection, but my wallet is happy too.
