La Provinciale plot
Gemma is in love with her half-brother, but since she can't marry him, she marries a schoolteacher. She doesn't love him and cheats on him, but is blackmailed by a countess who forces her to become a prostitute. She is devastated by this, but begins to love her husband more and more.
