Pig and Runt are born at almost the same time in the same Dublin hospital. It is clear from the start that there is a strong spiritual bond between the boy and the girl that makes them inseparable. More and more, the two form a powerful and seemingly indestructible pact that keeps them increasingly shutting out their family and environment. It is the transition to adulthood and the budding of sexual feelings that causes the first cracks in the close bond. Pubertal desires of jealousy and infatuation go their own way and it is mainly Pig who does not accept that he is going to lose his kindred spirit. The anger escalates into an inevitable spiral of violence.
